How to search for a school on Shala Darpan
The Citizen Window on Shala Darpan lets you look up any government or aided school in Rajasthan without logging in. You do not need an account, a registered mobile number, or any fee. The portal searches a database of over 100,000 schools, so you can find a school even if you only know part of its name or the area where it is located.
The search works best on a desktop or laptop. The mobile site loads the same data, but the layout can feel cramped on smaller screens. A desktop browser gives you wider tables and easier scrolling through long result lists.
Step-by-step instructions
Go to the Shala Darpan portal
Open rajshaladarpan.rajasthan.gov.in in your browser. The site loads in Hindi by default. You can switch the language to English from the top-right corner if you prefer.
Open the Citizen Window
Click "Citizen Window" or "Nagarik Window" on the homepage. This takes you to a page with several citizen services. One of them is "Search School" or "Vidyalaya Khoj."
Click "Search School"
Select the school search option. A form opens with fields for district, block, school name, and NIC-SD code. Not all fields are required. You can search with just a district and a partial name, or with just a code.
Fill in your search details
Pick the district first. Then pick the block if you know it. Type the school name or NIC-SD code in the text field. The captcha box at the bottom asks you to type the characters shown in the image. Fill it in, then click the search button.
Browse the results
A table of matching schools appears. If your search matches more than one school, you see a list. Click the school name or code to open its full profile. The profile shows the school's address, management type, staff count, and other details.
Ways to search
You do not need to use all the fields at once. The portal lets you combine filters in different ways, and each way has its strengths.
Search by school name
Type the name in the school name field. You do not need the full name. Typing "Govt Senior" in a district will show every government senior secondary school in that district. The search matches partial text, so "Mahatma" will find schools whose names contain that word anywhere.
This method works well when you know roughly what the school is called but not the exact spelling. Rajasthan school names often use local spellings, abbreviations, or Hindi words written in English. Partial matching helps with this.
Search by NIC-SD code
The NIC-SD code is a unique number assigned to each school on Shala Darpan. It is different from the UDISE code, though some documents use both. The NIC-SD code appears on school letterhead, UDISE certificates, and many official forms.
If you have this code, type it in the NIC-SD code field. The portal will find the exact school, assuming the code is valid. This is the fastest way to locate a specific school.
Search by district
Select a district from the dropdown to see all schools in that district. This gives you a broad list. Use it when you want to browse schools in an area, or when you are not sure of the school name and want to scan through options. You can then narrow the list by block or name.
Search by block
Pick a district first, then pick a block. This narrows the search to schools in a specific block. It is useful when you know the general area but not the exact school name. For example, if you want to see all schools in a particular tehsil or panchayat area, start with the district, then select the block.
Combining filters
You can combine any of these fields. For example, select a district, pick a block, and type part of the school name. The portal will return only schools that match all the criteria you entered. Adding more filters narrows the results. Removing filters widens them.
If you get zero results, try removing the block filter and keeping the district. Or try a shorter, more general name. The portal does not show a "no results" message if your search terms are too specific for the database.
What the results show
When you click a school from the results list, the portal displays a profile page with the following information:
| Field | What it means |
|---|---|
| School Name | The official name registered on Shala Darpan. This is the name used in government records. |
| NIC-SD Code | A unique number assigned to the school on the Shala Darpan portal. Different from the UDISE code, though both identify the same school. |
| Address | The full address, including the village or town, block, and district. Some entries also include the pin code. |
| Management Type | Whether the school is government-run, government-aided, or private. Private schools appear in the portal but their main data is on RajPSP. |
| Staff Count | The number of teachers and other staff registered at this school. This number reflects the latest available data on the portal. |
| School Category | Whether the school is primary, upper primary, secondary, or senior secondary. This tells you the grade levels the school covers. |
| Cluster and Block | The administrative grouping the school belongs to. Useful for understanding which education office oversees the school. |
The staff count and some other fields may not be up to date. The portal updates its data periodically, but not always in real time. If you need the latest figures, contact the school or the district education office directly.
Search tips that help
- Start broad, then narrow down. Select the district first. If the results list is long, add the block filter to shorten it. Then type part of the school name to find the exact one.
- Use short, general terms. Instead of typing "Government Upper Primary School Mahatma Gandhi Nagar," try "Mahatma" or "Upper Primary." The search matches partial text, so shorter terms catch more results.
- Check the spelling carefully. School names in Rajasthan often use local spellings. A name like "Jawahar" might appear as "Jwahar" in some records. Try alternate spellings if you get zero results.
- Try the village or town name. If you know where the school is but not what it is called, type the village or town name in the school name field. Many rural schools include the village name in their official title.
- Use the NIC-SD code when you have it. This is the most reliable way to find a specific school. The code is printed on UDISE certificates, school letterhead, and many government forms related to the school.
- Leave the block blank if you are not sure. The block field is optional. If you do not know which block a school is in, skip it. The portal will search across all blocks in the selected district.
- Try Hindi spellings if English does not work. The portal stores school names in both Hindi and English. If you are searching in English and getting no results, try the Hindi version of the name. Some schools are indexed primarily under their Hindi names.
Common problems and what to do
The portal is straightforward, but a few issues come up regularly.
- The captcha does not load. The captcha image sometimes fails to appear, especially on slow connections. Refresh the page and try again. If it still does not load, clear your browser cache and reload.
- The search takes a long time. The portal can be slow during peak hours, usually on weekday mornings. Try again in the evening or on a weekend. Broad searches (district only) can also take longer because they return thousands of results.
- Results show the wrong school. This usually means your search terms matched a different school. Check the NIC-SD code in the results to confirm you have the right one. The code is unique to each school.
- A school is missing from the results. The portal covers government and aided schools. Private schools are on a separate portal (RajPSP). If you are looking for a government school and it does not appear, it might be listed under a different name, or its data may not have been updated yet.
- The staff count looks wrong. The portal updates staff data periodically. If a school recently hired or lost teachers, the count may not reflect the current situation. For accurate staff information, check with the school or the block education office.
What you will not find on Shala Darpan
The school search has limits. It is a government database, not a complete school directory for Rajasthan. Here is what it does and does not cover.
- Government and aided schools only. Private, unaided, and minority schools are not in this portal. For private school data, use RajPSP.
- No school ratings or reviews. The portal does not rank schools or show parent reviews. It is an administrative database, not a school comparison tool.
- No real-time attendance or results data. The search shows basic school information. Student exam results, attendance figures, and other academic data are in separate sections of the portal, which may require a login.
- No contact details for most schools. The search results show the school address but usually do not include a phone number or email. For contact information, visit the school or contact the block education office.
- Data may be outdated. The portal does not always reflect changes made in the current academic year. School names, staff counts, and management types can change, and the portal may lag behind by a few months.
Why people search for schools
- Parents choosing a school. Before admitting a child, parents often want to confirm that a school exists, check its management type, and see its location.
- Teachers joining a new posting. After a transfer, teachers look up their new school to find its address and understand which block and district it belongs to.
- Students verifying school details. Students filling out forms for exams or scholarships sometimes need their school's NIC-SD code or official address.
- Researchers and journalists. People studying education access in Rajasthan use the portal to find school locations, count schools in a district, or verify administrative details.
- Government officials. Education department staff use the search to check school records, verify codes, and confirm management details during audits or inspections.
Private schools on Shala Darpan
The Shala Darpan school search covers government and aided schools only. Private schools appear in some parts of the portal, but their main data is on a separate site called RajPSP (Rajasthan Private Schools Portal).
If you search for a private school name on Shala Darpan, you may get zero results or see an entry with incomplete details. Use RajPSP instead. See our Shala Darpan vs RajPSP comparison for more on the differences between the two portals.
