Shala Darpan Login Problem: Fixes
Most login failures come from a small number of causes. Work through this list before you contact anyone for help.
Written by Gautami Bandopadhyay, founder of Shala Darpan Guide.
1. Check that you are using the right login type
This causes more failed attempts than any other issue. Staff Login and School/Office Login use separate accounts with different URLs and different credentials. A teacher who opens the School Login page will keep getting rejected no matter how many times they re-enter their password. Before trying anything else, check which login matches your role and make sure you are on the correct page.
A common mistake is bookmarking the wrong login page months ago and never noticing the difference. If your browser auto-fills a username that starts with "SCH" or "OFF" on the staff page, that is a sign you have the wrong page saved.
2. Forgot password or user ID
The official login pages carry dedicated recovery links. Which links you see depends on which login type you use:
- Staff Window: Look for "Forgot UserID?", "Forgot Password?", and a "One Time Registration" link for new staff members who have never logged in. The recovery process sends a reset link or OTP to the mobile number registered in the school system. Full steps are on our staff login guide.
- School/Office login: Look for "Forgot Password" plus "School Username Search" and "Office Username Search". The username search is useful if you cannot remember whether your school code is the same as your login ID. Full steps are on our school login guide.
If the recovery process asks for a mobile number and you no longer have access to that number, the school head or district education office can update it. You cannot change the registered number yourself through the login page.
3. OTP not arriving
An OTP that does not show up is frustrating but usually has a simple fix. Work through these steps in order:
- Check the mobile number on file. The OTP goes to the number registered in the school system, not necessarily the number on your current SIM card. If you changed your phone number recently, the system still sends to the old one.
- Wait two to three minutes before requesting again. SMS delivery in India can take a few minutes, especially during peak hours. If you tap "Resend OTP" five times in a row, the system may lock you out temporarily or send duplicate codes that arrive out of order.
- Check for a blocked or filtered number. Some phones and carriers filter government SMS into a separate folder, or block short codes entirely. Look in your spam or blocked messages folder. If you use Truecaller or a similar app, check whether it flagged the number.
- The SMS gateway may be slow during maintenance. If the portal shows a maintenance notice (see section 6 below), OTP delivery is often affected too. Wait until the maintenance window ends.
- The number may be incorrectly formatted in the system. If the school entered your number with an extra digit, a missing digit, or a wrong area code, OTPs will not reach you. Your school head can check and correct this in the school management tools.
- If the number is genuinely outdated, get it updated through your school or education office. This usually takes a day or two, not instant. Plan ahead if you know a result date is coming.
4. Captcha rejected
The captcha on Shala Darpan is there to prevent automated login attempts, but it can also block legitimate users who do not notice a detail. A few things to check:
- Type it exactly as shown. The captcha is case-sensitive. An uppercase A is not the same as a lowercase a. If the image shows "K7x", type exactly that, not "k7x" or "K7X".
- Refresh the captcha image before guessing. Some captcha images are hard to read. Click the refresh button next to the captcha box to get a new one rather than squinting at a blurry character. Each refresh gives you a fresh image that may be clearer.
- Disable browser spellcheck or autofill on the login fields. Some browsers try to "correct" what you type in the captcha box, changing capitalization or adding spaces. Turn off spellcheck for this page, or type the captcha into a plain text editor first and then paste it in.
- Check your keyboard layout. If you recently switched keyboard languages or use a regional layout, the characters you type may not match what you see on screen. Make sure you are typing in English (US or UK) layout.
- Zoom level can distort the image. If your browser is zoomed in or out, the captcha image may render with characters that look different from their actual shape. Reset zoom to 100% (Ctrl+0 on most browsers) and try again.
5. "You are already logged in" notice
This message appears when the same user session is still active somewhere. It can happen in several ways:
- You have the portal open in another tab in the same browser.
- You logged in on a different device (phone, tablet, another computer) and did not log out.
- A colleague or family member used your account on their device without logging out.
- Your browser restored a previous session after a restart.
To fix it, close all browser windows that have the portal open, not just the tab. On mobile, fully close the browser app (swipe it away from the recent apps list). Then open a fresh browser window and log in. If you still see the message, wait about 15 minutes. The session times out automatically after a period of inactivity.
6. Scheduled maintenance
The portal goes down for maintenance on a regular schedule, and it posts notices on the login pages before these windows. A typical notice reads: "user login access will not be available from 3 PM to 7 PM due to server maintenance activity." If you see a banner like this, there is nothing wrong with your account. The login will not work until the maintenance window ends.
Maintenance usually happens in the late evening or at night, but it is not always predictable. Our updates guide explains how to watch for these announcements. If you need to complete something urgent before a deadline, try to log in well ahead of the scheduled window rather than waiting until the last hour.
During maintenance, the OTP system may also be offline. Even if the login page loads, you might not receive an OTP. Wait for the maintenance notice to disappear before requesting one.
7. Result-day traffic and server overload
On Class 5th and 8th result days, the portal slows down or shows error pages because tens of thousands of users check at the same time. This is normal. The servers have limited capacity and cannot serve everyone simultaneously. What you can do:
- Try the official mirror sites. Results are also posted at
rajeduboard.rajasthan.gov.inandrajresults.nic.in. These may respond faster than the main portal on result days. - Avoid refreshing rapidly. Each refresh sends a new request to the server. If thousands of people do this at once, it makes the slowdown worse for everyone, including yourself.
- Try off-peak hours. The first hour after results are announced is the busiest. If you can wait, try early in the morning (before 8 AM) or late at night (after 10 PM) when traffic drops.
- Do not use multiple tabs to check results. Opening five tabs and refreshing all of them does not make results load faster. It uses more of your own bandwidth and adds to the server load.
See how to check results for a step-by-step walkthrough.
8. Browser-specific tips
Shala Darpan works best on Chrome and Firefox. Other browsers can work, but some features may not load correctly. Here is what to check by browser:
- Google Chrome: Keep Chrome updated. The portal uses modern web features that older Chrome versions may not support. If the login page looks broken or buttons do not respond, clear the cache for rajshaladarpan.rajasthan.gov.in specifically (Settings > Privacy > Clear browsing data > select "Cached images and files" > set time range to "Last 4 weeks").
- Mozilla Firefox: Firefox works well with the portal. If you have strict privacy settings (Enhanced Tracking Protection set to "Strict"), some portal features may break. Try setting it to "Standard" for this site, or add rajshaladarpan.rajasthan.gov.in to your exceptions list.
- Microsoft Edge: Edge is based on Chromium and generally works like Chrome. The same cache-clearing steps apply. If you use Edge with Internet Explorer mode enabled, disable it for the Shala Darpan site. IE mode can cause rendering problems.
- Safari (Mac/iPhone): Safari works on desktop but can have issues on older iOS versions. If the captcha does not display, try updating iOS or switching to Chrome on your iPhone.
- Internet Explorer: Do not use Internet Explorer. Microsoft ended support for it, and many government portals, including Shala Darpan, no longer test against it. Features will break.
On mobile devices, the official Shala Darpan app is more reliable than the mobile browser. The mobile website can be slow, and the captcha does not always display properly on small screens. If you must use a mobile browser, rotate to landscape mode for the login page, which gives more space for the captcha image.
9. Network and connectivity issues
Sometimes the problem is not the portal or your browser but your internet connection. A few things to check:
- Try a different network. If you are on school Wi-Fi and the portal will not load, try switching to mobile data (or the other way around). School networks sometimes block certain government sites or have firewall rules that interfere with OTP delivery.
- Disable VPNs or ad-blockers temporarily. Some VPNs route traffic through servers that the portal does not recognize, which can trigger security blocks. Ad-blockers and privacy extensions can also block the OTP script from running. Disable them for this site and try again.
- Check your DNS settings. If you can reach other government sites but not Shala Darpan, your DNS may not be resolving the domain correctly. Try switching to Google DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) or Cloudflare DNS (1.1.1.1) in your network settings.
- Check for proxy settings. Some school and office networks use a proxy server. If the proxy is misconfigured or down, you will not be able to reach the portal. Ask your network administrator or try a different connection.
- Weak mobile signal. If you are on 2G or a weak 3G connection, the login page may time out before it finishes loading. Move to an area with better signal or connect to Wi-Fi.
10. Confirm you are on the real portal
Look-alike sites exist. Some copy the look of Shala Darpan to collect login details. Before entering your password, check the address bar. The URL should start with https://rajshaladarpan.rajasthan.gov.in/. If the domain is anything else, even if it looks similar, do not enter your credentials. See our guide on identifying the official website for more detail.
11. When the portal is down
The portal goes down for two reasons: scheduled maintenance and unexpected outages. Scheduled maintenance is announced in advance (see section 6). Unexpected outages happen without warning, usually due to server problems or high traffic.
If you cannot reach the portal at all (the page will not load, not even the login screen), wait 30 minutes and try again. Check the updates page for any announcements about known issues. During result days, the servers get overwhelmed and may take longer to recover. Try during off-peak hours, like early morning or after 10 PM.
You can also check whether the problem is on your end by visiting a different website. If other sites load fine but Shala Darpan does not, the issue is likely with the portal, not your connection.
12. Getting help from your school
Your school head or principal has access to the school management tools that can fix most account issues. They can:
- Reset your password when you have forgotten it and the self-service recovery does not work.
- Update your mobile number in the system so OTPs reach your current phone.
- Correct your name or date of birth if there is a mismatch in the records.
- Look up your NIC-SD ID if you do not know it.
- Check whether your account is active or has been locked due to too many failed login attempts.
For issues the school cannot fix, such as portal-wide technical problems or policy-level questions, the school will escalate to the district education office. This escalation process takes time, so do not expect an instant resolution for issues that need office-level approval.
13. When to contact the block office
Contact the block education office when your school head cannot resolve the issue. Common reasons to go to the block office include:
- Your account is linked to the wrong school (for example, after a transfer).
- Your records show incorrect qualification or designation data that the school cannot change.
- You need a new NIC-SD ID created because you are a new employee and the school's registration tools do not cover your case.
- There is a dispute about which school or office your account belongs to.
Carry your school ID, Aadhaar, and any transfer or appointment letters when you visit. The block office can also help with portal-level technical issues that affect multiple schools in their area, such as bulk data errors or regional server problems.
14. Still stuck?
If none of the steps above work, your school, principal, or the education office is the fastest practical support channel. They can verify your ID, mobile number, and password in person. For portal-level technical issues that nobody at the school or block level can fix, official contact information appears on the portal's own Contact Us page.
